Googling The New Vernacular

Right now, if you google, "The New Vernacular", my blog comes up as the 31st result. Not bad when you consider that "New Vernacular" is also a type of American architecture that a lot of people aparently like to write about on the web.

But... if you search "thenewvernacular", I'm number #1!

And if you Google "Mike Westling", my blogger profile is #1. I should probably take the time to actually write something in there, eh? A few of my posts follow in the top ten.

I'm also the third site if you search Google for "Feingold '08"! Just a little less significant now that Feingold and his wife recently announced that they will soon be getting a divorce
(which essentially trashes his chances for a presidental run in '08, considering the impact of the "values"in the last election. It's truly not something that should affect it, but it obviously will. It won't hurt him in Wisconsin, but it would have an impact in a national race. And seeing that Feingold said he would only run if he thought he would have the best chance of winning.... it doesn't look good. More than anything else, I'm just sorry that it happened. Actually being a good, thoughtful politician who goes to a listening session in every county would put a strain on any family situation.)

Anyway..
The New Vernacular has also been getting hits from people searching "Russ Feingold '08" on Technocrati. People actually searching for information that I'm writing about, and then coming to my site to read about it... that's the point, right? I find it exciting, anyway.

(if you hadn't noticed, I'm doing some excessive name dropping to try and bump that Google pagerank up a bit, [evil laugh])

it's self-defeating to concede a point that, from what i've been reading, has mostly been made by people who don't agree that his divorce should matter.

those who truly feel that this kind of thing has no affect on one's ability to govern should be saying so, and not just declaring it as a footnote to the perceived "conventional wisdom."

The only people saying it doesn't matter are also pretty much the only people paying any attention to Feingold at this point (unfortunately).

I'm very curious to see how this will affect his decision to run. It may just give him another reason to do so, since there's less to lose. I feel really bad saying that, because I don't want to trivialize the matter... I'm just throwing it out there and hoping that everything still comes together for him. If it does, I plan to be dropping everything and going to work for him in a couple years.

btw, it's awesome to see a site for Feingold in New Jersey, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it.

some more perspectives, posted by Ann Althouse (http://althouse.blogspot.com/)
from a Milwaukee Journal Sentinal article:

"This is the end of his presidential hopes, at least for 2008," said the University of Virginia's Larry Sabato, an expert in presidential campaigns.

"The Democratic Party is much more tolerant of things, but a twice-divorced single man would have very little chance of being elected president. That is not something that would appeal to any red state."

Two weeks ago, the Feingolds traveled to Alabama. The public portion of the trip ran March 28-30. Mary Feingold was very visible as the Feingolds were received and entertained by local officials, Democrats and supporters....

Sabato, who regarded Feingold as a long shot for the presidency, said he would have inherent difficulty in capturing a Southern state or borderline conservative state and news of a second divorce "absolutely would not help. It's superficial, but a strong enough reason for the Democrats to look elsewhere."

According to Sabato, the only previously divorced man to win the White House was Ronald Reagan. "One divorce is survivable" for a prospective president, he said. "Two divorces is not, especially when one is unmarried. And Feingold would not jump into another marriage before 2008."

I wonder how much blog discussion there is over how this divorce is affecting him personally. I know that politicians have to be questioned, and that there are many sides to this whole argument, but it's.... deflating (?) that things like this are in someways viewed as fodder.

Totally unrelated: for any of your poli sci classes, did you ever have to read All the King's Men or Primary Colors?

I'd guess that Feingold probably doesn't play too much attention to blogs (even though he has kindof started his own). He's a pretty busy politician and any info he gets from the blogosphere is probably filtered by his staff first, just for lack of time. Most of the discussion has been from Feingold supporters worried about how this will affect a run for president in '08, but even most bloggers aren't paying much attention to the issue.

I haven't had to read All the King's Men or Primary Colors for any classes, although I would like to read Primary Colors at some point, I hear it's good.

Good points.

Supposedly A.t.K.M is the best political novel ever written (according to my prof) and it's what Primary Colors is based on....
